A Perfect Day

Yesterday was one of those perfect days that go on forever. There was perfect weather, awesome food, great friends and much slurry drunk conversation (my favorite kind). Some of my friends are Obama supporters, not obamabots, but thoughtful people. We got to talk about the election with anyone throwing out sexist terms, which is so very rare in this election. My friends have no problem with voting for Hillary if she is the nominee, though they know that I will not vote for Obama unless he is Hillary’s vp.

I miss that. I miss thoughtful discussion with people who are supposed to be on our side. I miss intelligent debate. While there is no way my opinion can be swayed towards Obama, it is still nice to see that we have much in common with those on the other side. After weeks of hearing nothing but screaming sexists crazies rail on about “that bitch” it made me happy.

Afterwards, a bunch of us packed up and continued the drinking at my house- where every single boy in the room had voted for Hillary in the primary. Every one. And contrary to popular belief, they were young (all under 35), well educated members of the creative class. (Actually I had a house full of Microsoft employees last night- not terribly uncommon here but still I feel a bit like I’m being absorbed by the borg).

I will still continue to mock the bots mercilessly, but it’s good to know they are not all Kooliad cultists. And no one once mentioned the words hope or unity.

Which oddly enough, gives me hope.

Blog against Homophobia day

It’s finally nice here so i am running off to the park to drink sangria out of nalgene bottles and eat homemade pasta salad and hummus with cukes.

So I don’t have time to write a whole post on Blog against Homophobia day.

Instead see here for videos that will make you cry and here about the right to live love and fuck how you wish.

Gary rights obviously are about more than just the right to marry. It’s still okay in many many many places to kill someone for being gay. Even here (google gay panic defense)

That’s all for now luvkins. Enjoy your Saturday.

This Is Our Lives: The Disabled Version

In this thread on Feministe, where a dicussion of feminism & class issues took a turn for the classist, I found this tasty little Gem (emphasis mine):

Paraponera says:

[snip usal re-hashed classist bullshit]

“Anyway, only those who can comfortably afford it, and don’t have any major inheritable physical or mental defects, should seriously consider having children. That may not be peecee, but it sure as hell is common sense”

Friday Night Ear Candy

I’ve decided I like doing the single band music posts. So here is Jolie Holland- a girl who sounds like she’s been drinking texas moonshine since the cradle. I love her.

Mad Tom of Bedlam (Kid loves this song and it’s gruesome lyrics. So Do I)

Old Fashioned Morphine (This song made me run out and wiki Isabelle Eberhardt)

And last but not least- Crush in the Ghetto

Cynics really are just big mushy romantics at heart

So I’ve been watching videos of responses to the CA marriage equality ruling. I know, I’m a slutty girl who likes to put down marriage whenever possible (I have said that health insurance and citizenship are the only real reasons to get married).

But like most cynics- my cranky exterior just covers up my super tender mushy insides. So I’ve been tearing up, near sobbing, over the sweetness of the videos below.

First- from the courthouse steps

Then Ellen talking about marrying Portia. And I bet Ellen has the best wedding dance in history, she’s got some moves.

This crusty cynic wishes all the happy couples a life full of all the legal rights they deserve.

Here’s where I ask the fearless readers to do something icky for the Kid

As i mentioned, the Kid is studying the constitution and in a few weeks they are having debates on various topic. The Kid was going to do pro-gay marriage, but that got shot down by the principal (I think they didn’t ant to make anyone take the anti-side).

Since the Kid, lovable moppet that he is, is perpetually late to his first class, he missed the sign up period and got stuck with………

wait for it………..

wait for it………

Arguing the pro side of governmental wire tapping.

Now he is my kid and we are nothing if not kick ass debaters. Even though we both shudder at the idea of wiretapping, we want him to win his debate.

So I need you darling readers to put on your best scary republican face and make like wiretapping is a good thing. We need 6 pro-wiretapping sources by Monday. We need good arguments. And I need your help cause I’m having a hard time bending my mind around it (don’t forget- I’m already one of those people who gets chosen for “random” bag searches nearly every time I fly so I find it hard to be cheery at more forms of government invasion into privacy).

Help my kid kick ass and I will write a post on any topic of your choosing. Wanna hear about porn? Religion? My trashy sex life? Shameless confessions about anything. Help me and you get to read about whatever you want.

Compliments

One of my favorite questions to ask people is “What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?” It tells me more about the person than anything else.

So I’ve gotten a good share of compliments in my life. I’m a pretty girl, I don’t think there is a body part that hasn’t been complimented. While I love getting these kinds of compliments, they don’t generally make it into my favorites list.

Until the other night when the Hot Bulgarian (now to be known as THBWTPSC- the hot Bulgarian with the porn star cock) said I have black cherry eyes. I love black cherries. I think that’s awesome.

In lots of countries, people with my coloring, black hair and near black eyes, have a special name. Here, we don’t even think of them as black eyes- they are brown.

Before THBWTPSC, my favorite compliment was that I am dynamic. I like that. I like the idea of being quick and powerful and a force for change.

So fearless readers- what’s your favorite compliment?

Yay California!

As I’ve told you all, the Kid is studying the constitution in school and last week he had a debate about gay marriage in his classroom.

The Kid, being a child who has always been around gay people and who has a mom who falls pretty near the middle of the Kinsey scale, came out to me as straight when he was 8. Conversation went like this-

“So mom, I think I’ve got it figured out”

“What do you have figured out”

“There are men who love other men and they are gay”

“Yes”

“And there are men who love women and they are straight”

“Yes, and there are also women who love women and they are gay too”

“Okay, I think when I grow up I am going to be straight”

“Okay kiddo, but those aren’t the only choices, there are people who love both men and women too”

And at that point I think gave his little 8 year old brain more info than it could handle. But I am told that it is pretty normal for kids who are around lots of gay and bi people to come out to their parents as straight (if that’s what they are).

So we have been more than tolerant (tolerant implies being kind to people who you think are different- we think people are just people and should get to love who they want)in our home. And he of course took this into the debate with him.

But the interesting part was talking to him about the constitutionality of DOMA afterwards.

My favorite poly sci professor ever, Mac Murray, is an old school civil rights attorney. He’s the one who enlightened me about how the gay marriage debate is finally going to end in this country. And I got to pass this little nugget onto the Kid.

In article IV is the full faith and credit act. This means that all states must give credit to the public and judicial acts of other states. This includes honoring the marriages of people married but moved to other states. Once we have states that have full legal marriage for gays and one of those couples moves to state that doesn’t have full legal marriage, they can challenge on constitutional grounds. And if the Supreme court (where it eventually will end up) stays true to the constitution then gay marriage will HAVE to be allowed.

But it must be marriage. Domestic partnerships don’t fall into the full faith and credit act. And as we all know, domestic partnerships are a half assed attempt at placating people without giving them real rights. It’s the gay version of separate but (not) equal.

So yay California. Your supreme court’s ruling that domestic partnership does not equal marriage puts us one step closer to that day when the Supreme Court says “a marriage in one state between gay people must be honored in all states”.

And the Kid will be happy yo hear this when he gets home tonight.

Sorry Kids

But I’m off to help a hot Bulgarian escape from the dungeons of Microsoft.

I know it’s West Virginia Night ! w00t!w00t! eleventyone!1!111111!!!!!1 But since I will be too busy getting my groove on to fight trolls, comment moderation is on.

Instead I hope you will all enjoy these lovely Decemberists videos and come to understand why someday i will have Collin Meloy’s hyperliterate lovechild. He’s what Dickens would have been if Dickens was a rockstar.
