Part of the problem

I’ve said before that the only reasons to marry are for green cards and health insurance. I used to say money too, but it turns out that I am absolutely no good at being in love for cash.

Not to say I haven’t tried. Ah hell, last year I got all stupid over a successful, handsome lawyer who wanted to make me his very well kept housewife. But I just couldn’t do it. I know I would have had a life of financial ease (not just with him but with several others who I could at least have been a very expensive mistress). BUT I CAN’T DO IT!

Why can’t I do it? Maybe it’s self respect, though I am totally down with those who choose to do sex work and don’t think anyone can take your self respect unless you give it to them. Maybe it’s that I have a strong feeling that if you do something you love for money, then you will no longer love the thing you do (so no sex for cash for me. Also no owning a restaurant, selling my paintings ,

Quick update

It’s been a totally sucky weekend, though I am now at my friend CJ’s house abusing her facilities in the worst way. Tomorrow I’ll be back at work and able to write more.

I was told on Tuesday that it would take 48 hours, which meant that I would have part of the problem fixed by 2pm on Thursday. Numerous phone calls, voicemails, etc were made Thursday afternoon and all day Friday with no response. There is an automated update line that I have been dialing like phone psychic junkie that tells me that there is no information on my case. If I didn’t have a doctor’s appointment that took me months to get first thing tomorrow morning, I would go down to their office and make a nuisance of myself until they tell me something. The soonest I can harass them in person is Tuesday morning, which means the soonest we’d have power back is Wednesday. Which means one entire January week spent in the dark and cold. Shit, at this rate the money I’ve spent on candles and batteries and take out (and overdraft fees cause we didn’t have the money for candles, batteries and take out to begin with), plus the money it’s going to cost me to restock the fridge would have gone a long ass way towards paying my bill.

I’m tired of this. Really really tired. The constant struggle for daily necessities has pretty much eliminated any tiny glints of joy. I’m at the bottom of Maslov’s pyramid with no options for climbing up.

Hello Hello Hello

It’s been quiet on the comments front the last day or so. Is it because the comments were broken? Do you all not love me anymore? Show me some love!

Maybe it’s a good time to have a delurking post. Stop in, say hi. Don’t be shy. I mostly don’t bite 😉

Besides, it’s delurking week. It would be positively anti-holiday of you to stay quiet.

Oh the fricken humanity!

The later it gets in the game and the more I like Clinton. Oh I know she has some great big issues when it comes to Iraq and she’s more moderate than I would prefer.

But damn, the woman has 16 years of being the dead center of the rethuglikan and media bulls eye. She’s been incredibly strong, stronger than most of us could be under that kind of pressure. Can’t the woman cut a break. “She’s too cold, too aggressive, not likable”.

So when she shows some emotion and gets the slightest bit misty while talking about where our country needs to go, of course everyone jumps on her for being an emotional girl. Fucking hell. I’d much rather have a president who gets misty over our country rather than one whose only emotional states seem to be dickwad cowboy and tantrum throwing tyrant.

Thanks for doing all the hard work for me

Erica Barnett actually does the hard work of explaining why she’s not for Obama.

Ralph Nader quietly comes out in support of John Edwards
. I hate Nader as a candidate, but as a public rabble rouser and endorser he might redeem himself for 2000.

Fame done right: George Clooney to boycott the Golden Globes and the Oscars because of the writer’s strike- other celebs follow. And Brad Pitt’s project raises over 10 million to build houses in New Orleans.

It’s Monday and I have no coffee. That’s all you get till I’m caffeinated.

Just to make B jealous

Yesterday we got two containers of nearly perfect blackberries, some gorgeous fuji apples and a bag of delicious cherries.

Just to make B even more jealous, we got them with the Safeway card she so kindly sent me for Christmas. Every time I pop a juicy, delicious cherry into my mouth I will remember to thank the postal gods, the inventor of gift cards, the Chilean fruit industry and B for being the coolest blog friend ever.

More Poly Sci 101- Or things I completely believe

1) There is only one mistake that cannot be corrected, and that is the death penalty.

I’m not a peacenik or a pacifist. I’m super lefty progressive, but I think that sometimes revolutions need blood. But the death penalty in never a form of revolution or even justice and is the only form of punishment that has no reversal. I was watching Thomas Kahill (Spelling?) on PBS say that “No one who has money ever ends up on death row”. Poor people don’t commit worse crimes than wealthy people (Hello OJ), they just have less legal resources and therefore become fodder for our public bloodlust.

2) Just like there should be no taxation without representation, there is no representation without taxation.

Taxes, besides paying for the common good, are one of the best way we have of judging how well our government is representing us. In countries that have no need of taxes because of some alternate form of wealth (specifically oil rich countries) there is no reason for the government to bow to the demands of it’s citizens because the citizens are not paying for the government, outside interests are.

In our country, when I hear the “strangle the government in the bathtub” people start speaking, what I hear is “so that we don’t have to do what the people want anymore”. It’s not just that the no taxes people are personally selfish (though that is a part of it) it’s that there is no need to represent citizens (or tax payers) best interests if they are not being taxed. And if people are not being taxed, they have no measure of whether their government is providing the services they want. People are generally rational and understand that nothing comes free. But we also understand when we are being screwed over,
