Research papers

I have 2 research papers due this quarter. One is about the increasing rates of arrest of victim-defendants in domestic abuse situations. Not a fun paper to write- especially since it is supposed to include a synthesis of an event or situation in my own life. Digging that crap up and putting it on paper for a favorite professor to read has not been easy.

So for my second paper- I’m going with something snarky. I have decided to take a bunch of evo-psych, sociobiology crap that has been interpreted to keep women in their place (oh women prefer the color red- must be left over from those days of gathering red berries- that’s why they are better grocery shoppers than men) and reinterpret it from a matriarchal view. Might almost be as good as the “8 Easy Ways to A U.S. Sponsored Coup” paper (that one was done in the style of an infomercial).

So anyone with a study they would like turned upside down in the snarkiest way possible should send me a link.

I need to stop being polite

One of the first classes I took when I went back to college was American Government. It was an easy class with a crazy-fabulous professor. He assigned us the African American History Calendar as part of our reading and was hands down the best person I have ever seen at taking down an idiot’s arguments without the idiot realizing it (though everyone else did).

But all classes have problems. There was one day when a couple of Seattle police officers came to talk to the class about civil rights and explain miranda warnings. They were, as many officers are want to be, full of cock swagger and machismo. One of them asked, but never answered the question “Can you rape a whore?”

I raised my hand, but for some reason I give myself away when I’m about to tear someone a new one (might be the flaring nostrils and steam coming out of my ears). I still follow the rules of a polite society and raise my fucking hand, but I don’t get called on. (This happens all the fucking time in my economics class- I think the proff knows I could tear his minimum wage arguments to bits in under 30 seconds) .

So I never got to comment on “Can you rape a whore?”

Apparently a judge in Pennsylvania has answered the question for me with a big giant NO. Even if the woman was held at gunpoint and gang raped- it’s just theft of services.

I think I need a really big drink now.

Fun classroom conversations…

The scene- this evening, a group of students gearing up for our first physical anthropology exam. We are nervous. The exam review sheet is ROUGH. You know what happens when a group of people is collectively nervous?

Completely inappropriate ideas. Like instead of having a normal Halloween costume, how about a dirty, sweaty, sticky group meiosis party. Meiosis, for the non-sciencey is the technical term for cell division in sexual reproduction.

“I’m gonna come as a bitchy mitochondria diva!”

“Hey baby, can I replicate some proteins for ya?”

“Oh you naughty boy, I’m not gonna recombine my DNA with just anybody!”

And now I realize that my dorkiness is not nearly as well closeted as I imagined. What will I do if they find out I like trashy sci-fi TV shows? I am so gonna lose all my cool points.

Radiohead, how do I love thee…..

Radiohead put out their latest album on the web and let fans pick their own price (even free if they so choose),

And from the looks of it- they aren’t going broke. I have a feeling the record companies are going to be crying over this. I’m not feeling any pity though.

For way too long record companies have been fixing prices, dominating airwaves, and screwing artists. Oh and suing poor single moms for downloading a couple of albums. $17.99 is not the price the free market thinks a record should be sold at, and $1.50 per album is not enough reimbursement for an artist.

We music lovers get that artists need to make money. You can’t write songs on an empty belly. But we also don ‘t like getting screwed by a giant industry. So when downloading songs from p2p networks became feasible- people flocked to it. Bands like it (their music gets out there) and they can make money doing what bands are supposed to do- playing music live.

There is always that one guy

In every class, there is that one guy who takes over and derails the class into what he wants instead of what the class is trying to focus on. And that one guy is always always always a guy, women don’t do that very often.

Ruth (a genius brainiac math major) and I were talking about that one guy the other night. The current guy driving her to distraction has been nicknamed “Hairlip” not because he has one but because she says “If you saw him, you’d understand”. He likes to interrupt when other people ask questions in order to change the focus to him.

I don’t have a nickname for the guy that’s bugging me, but the way he derails my physical anthropology class every fucking time has started to get to me. The first night of class he made a comment about how “we all can agree that there are too many women having babies that they can’t raise”. Uhm – no we can’t all agree on that.

As class has progressed, it’s become really fucking obvious that this is a Nice GuyTM who is trying to find biological justification for why women won’t fuck him. He derailed the class the other night to talk about how we are biologically programed to choose a mate and that studies have shown that women all over the world want men who are 3 to 5 years older than them and financially secure and that men want youth and beauty. The professor (god love him) tried to tell him that it might be culturally based and not biological, but the guy just kept screaming about studies in babies. I interrupted his rant. “All of those attributes are culturally determined, name one country in that study where women have greater economic power than men- name one. You can’t and until women have economic power of course they are going to choose men with money over men with looks”. He continued screaming about babies for a minute. Then we took a break (It’s a 3 hour class).

Outside, a young woman, maybe 21 thanked me for interrupting the guy. Ruth, who interrupted Hairlip after another woman asked a question that Hairlip derailed, also got a thank you. Ruth and I both agreed that there was a sense of “fuck yeah” after finally getting the assholes to shut up for a second.

I wonder how long I can hold out until I just scream out in class that “the reason you’re not getting laid is cause you’re an asshole, not because of biology!” We’ll see how it goes.

Saturday Girl Rock Blogging

Last night I finally got to see a band I have tried many many times to see before- the fantastic Sugar Skulls.

Let’s see- hot girls (and a guy drummer) playing rad music makes me a happy chica. Ursula- the bass player, came out in a bra and panty set complete with baby heads sewn in over the naughty bits so it looked a bit like she’d just given birth to plastic triplets. Awesome.

Per Ruth- “They make time changes sexy and dancable”. I just thought it was awesome to see a Seattle band actually get Seattlites (who are usually way to concerned with looking cool) to dance. Shit, Le Tigre couldn’t even get Seattlites to dance.

Check out The Sugar Skulls Myspace page to hear a few songs.

Dear MRAs:

Please stop whining about paying child support- the statistics show that you are not actually paying it.

Jeff Fecke wrote a brilliant post at Shakesville explaining what an MRA is.

So are MRAs concerned about anything other than raping and beating women?

Oh, sure — they also don’t want to pay child support. There’s a huge segment of MRAdom that’s fed by divorced men angry that their ex got custody of the kids, and now they have to fork over money to support them.

There is much more that is worth reading there, but I am going to go pick apart the whole men’s choice/child support argument.

Here’s the basics of the Men’s Choice idea. MRAs want the right to opt out of fatherhood the same way a women gets to opt out of motherhood. Except, women who choose abortion aren’t so much opting out of motherhood as they are opting out of pregnancy- opting out of motherhood is a side effect, an important side effect, but still a side effect. MRAs claim that since women get to decide if they are going to let another human being use them as a life support system then men should get to decide not to be responsible for the child after birth.

That argument doesn’t fly for a couple of reasons. First, people choose (hopefully) who they have sex with and if they are going to use prevention measures like condoms or birth control. Both men and women have the ability to choose to sleep with someone who uses those measures or not and to not sleep with someone who is of a different view (I’m not counting rapes- that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms) . There is a risk that those measures will fail- and from that risk disease and pregnancy happen.

Now if disease happens, both partners can get treatment (or not get treatment if it’s untreatable). It’s equal there. If pregnancy happens- only one partner is at risk for death and other health problems related to either pregnancy or abortion. That is why women get to choose to continue a pregnancy. It is their body that does the work. But a child (or potential child- I don’t think either matters in the pro-choice argument) has already been created. And if that child is born- it needs to be supported.

Here’s where the MRAs get their panties in a wad. Women can choose to have an abortion or have a baby, men can’t. They think that in the interest of fairness, men should get to opt out of fatherhood before the child is born if the woman decides to continue the pregnancy. I can see the point kind of, but…

Children are part of society. Society has a vested interest in seeing that children are supported until adulthood because those children will grow up to contribute to society. Our society says that it is the parents job to care for those children. Women get the opt out option only before birth because it is their life and health that is at risk during pregnancy. Once the child is born, the women has no right to kill a child because the risk to her own life is no longer there. Men do not have a risk to their life or health because of pregnancy, so they never get that option (maybe someday when embryos are grown in incubators instead of women’s bodies then no one will get to choose).

But back to the children are part of society thing. They are not property like a car. With a car, you pay for the maintenance on it until the car is no longer in your possession. With a child, whether that child is in your possession or not, it needs care from it’s parents.

Because of the way society is structured, women do most of the caring for children. Fair- no but that is how it’s been structured. Slowly, it is becoming more acceptable for men to do the caring. Feminists fully support that change. But since women still do most of the caring, women are also most likely to be the custodial parent when parents are not together.

So women are doing the work of childrearing alone. Because children still need the support of two parents, we have child support. Child support is not parenting. It is financial support. No non-custodial parent has ever been put in jail for missing little Johnny’s baseball game or skipping Suzie’s dance recital. Any non-custodial parent is free to skip the hard work part of parenting- the actual being there part. You may be an asshole for it, but there are lots of assholes in the world and you’ll have company. Child support is the bare minimum of care that society requires of non-custodial parents. It is much easier to write a check than it is to show up and it benefits the child by ensuring housing, nutrition, health care, etc. All these things are needed to ensure a child reaches adulthood.

And most non-custodial parents have not paid child support according to what society (specifically the legal system) requires. According to the Office of Child Support Enforcement– 70% of child support cases are in arrears. (There are 11,157,421 cases in arrears and 15,844,238 cases total). Over 105 billion dollars is owed in past due child support.

$105 Billion.

$105 billion dollars that is not going to feed or house little Suzy and Johnny. $105 billion that either the custodial parents have to make up out of thin air or that society has to cover. That’s a lot of money, about $9500 per case. In my particular case- the number is $40,000 that is owed. Over the course of 12 years, that is about $277 per month that has not been paid (about the cost of feeding and clothing the kid, housing (the kid’s half) is about $600 more and we won’t even get into health care costs). the actual child support order is for $328 per month. That is way less than half the actual cost of raising the kid. It’s maybe a third. The Kid’s dad has never been threatened with jail if he didn’t pay it. He has never had anything bad happen to him for not paying it, other than a mark on his credit rating. His not paying child support has lead to bad things for his child though. We live at about half of what the poverty level is. Society has had to pick up a large chunk of the cost for keeping the kid fed and housed and we qualify for medicaid. If I, as the custodial parent were to stop contributing my money to raising the child (by not feeding him or clothing him) I would face jail for child endangerment- which has a much stiffer sentence than jail for failure to pay child support, though they are the same essential acts.

So please MRAs, your whining about paying child support is falling on deaf ears because it is a crock of shit. If you really don’t like the laws- then either lobby for greater funding for social safety nets for children or get a vasectomy- or both. But we see through your whining about fairness, because there is nothing fair about it.

Huh?

So I’ve been reading a bit lately on christian feminism (and in the words of another blogger, no, that’s not an oxymoron)

Why just lately, I find myself wondering? i’m a christian, i’m a woman, and the “traditional” (or should i say faux-traditional?) “understanding” of male/female relations taught to us in church never rang true with what I believed God really had in mind… but, the patriarchalists had the Bible on their side… or did they?

(insert thoughts on how egalitarian understanding may actually be the more biblical…. etc…)

So i’m following a link on Amazon in the (find the category)
